Paris has so many incredible monuments, churches, buildings, and locations that it's easy to overlook the beautiful bridges that span the river Seine.
One of these bridges is the Pont Alexandre III, which is being used as one of the venues for this year's Olympics.
The famous bridge is named after Tsar Alexander III of Russia to commemorate a treaty signed between the two countries in 1882. Inaugurated in 1900 for the World's Fair, it is located between the Grand Palais (the subject of yesterday's newsletter) and the Invalides. It is the most ornate of all the bridges in Paris. The Beaux Arts style bridge is flanked by four 50-foot columns topped with gilded winged horses representing the Illustrious Arts, Sciences,
Commerce, and Industry. Other accoutrements include cherubs, nymphs, and gorgeous Art Nouveau style lamps.
Competitions located at the bridge include cycling, marathon swimming, and triathlon. Cycling is now over with Kristen Faulkner taking the gold medal for the US in women's road race. Triathlon is in the books as well with the US winning silver in the mixed relay. Marathon swimming is scheduled for today and tomorrow.
Also on the schedule today for the US team are golf, sport climbing, athletics, canoe sprint, wrestling, taekwondo, sailing, modern pentathlon, diving, volleyball, cycling track, water polo, and basketball.
To watch on TV, tune in to NBC or stream on Peacock and other platforms. France is 6 hours ahead of US Eastern time and 9 hours ahead of US Pacific time.
