The Par des Princes soccer stadium in Paris

2024 Paris Olympics day 17

Paris Olympics news:

We've talked mostly about the classical venues of Paris, but when it comes to sports, there is one venue that is very special in the hearts of French people: The Parc des Princes (Princes Park). Soccer is, by far, the most popular sport in France and the Parc des Princes has a place in French soccer history like no other.

The Parc des Princes stadium in its current state only dates from 1972, which, in Parisian standards, is hardly broken-in! However, it has seen a lot of amazing soccer history over the last fifty years as well as many memorable concerts.

The Parc des Princes, located in the upscale 16th arrondissement of Paris, received its name because of the wooden parkland used by the Royal family that used to exist on the site before the revolution.

First inaugurated in 1897 as a velodrome, the venue was rebuilt as a soccer stadium in 1932 and then rebuilt again in 1972 to its current form. The Parc des Princes is home to the legendary Parisian soccer team, the Paris St Germain team.

The French men's soccer team made it to the final round yesterday but Spain took the gold medal. The women's final is today with the US playing Brazil!

Also on the schedule today for the US team: Diving, modern pentathlon, taekwondo, sport climbing, water polo, weightlifting, wrestling, canoe sprint, break-dancing, soccer, and athletics.

To watch on TV, tune in to NBC or stream on Peacock and other platforms. France is 6 hours ahead of US Eastern time and 9 hours ahead of US Pacific time.
